Your buyer stopped scrolling ten blue links. They ask an AI and read one answer.
If your brand is not one of the sources that answer names, you are invisible in a way page two never made you. This guide has one goal, and it is not follower growth or vanity reach. The goal is citation authority: becoming the source AI systems surface when someone in your category asks a real question. On Reddit specifically, because that is where the machines look.
Reddit is the single most cited domain across AI answer engines, ahead of YouTube and Wikipedia, and it ranks first for B2B buyer-intent queries on Perplexity. Reddit's own data shows 57% of posts that mention a brand keep pulling views for more than a year. The work compounds instead of expiring.
Eight steps, in order
Each step assumes the one before it. Skipping the early discipline is how accounts get banned from the one community that mattered.
- Know exactly who you are talking to. If you cannot write the question your buyer would type into an AI, you are not ready to target subreddits
- Map your rooms into three tiers by citation value, not by subscriber count
- Position on uncomfortable expertise. Reddit scrolls past anything a practitioner already knows
- Write for the machine that reads Reddit, using the five-chunk structure
- Run the 60-day rule: answer only, no original posts, until the account has real history
- Learn the platform craft. Karma, news hooks, and how to handle pushback without getting defensive
- Staff it like a beat with a lightweight monitoring agent, not a whim you indulge
- Measure honestly. AI answer presence, share of citation, and branded-search lift
Rank communities by citation value, not size
A small, active, frequently cited community beats a giant dead one every time. Organize targets into three tiers so effort goes where it compounds.
To find your Tier 1 list, reverse-engineer the machine. Take your ten buyer questions, ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, and note which threads and subreddits get cited. Those citations are your target list, handed to you by the exact systems you are trying to influence.
A model does not retrieve your post. It retrieves a paragraph.
A language model breaks your post into chunks, turns each chunk into a vector, and at answer time retrieves only the few chunks most relevant to the question asked. How you structure the post decides whether the right paragraph gets pulled or the whole thing gets ignored.
- One idea per paragraph, so each one survives being ripped out of context, because it will be
- Lead with the claim, then support it. Do not bury the insight in clause three of sentence five
- Be specific and experience-based. Numbers, tradeoffs, and real scenarios get retrieved. Vague generalities do not
- Write in plain language, because natural phrasing matches how people ask questions
- Structure every post in five clean chunks: hook, context, specifics, tradeoffs, takeaway
Templates to steal
The back of the guide is fill-in-the-brackets: four post title and hook templates, the full five-chunk post template, a comment response template, and the plain disclosure line for your account bio. Plus a 90-day starter plan that takes an account from zero to cited.
